Understanding How Others Perceive Your Leadership Style

Are you curious how others perceive your leadership style? I recently came upon the quote below from Warren Bennis that really intrigued me. Without getting too philosophical, how does one become oneself? What are the factors that shape us? Nature vs. Nurture? Opportunities vs. Struggles? If experiences play a part, then aren’t we always evolving?

“Becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself. It is precisely that simple and it is also that difficult.”
– Warren Bennis

Here’s what I do know. The person we tell ourselves we are can be very different from the person others perceive us to be, especially in the workplace. If you’re a leader in business, it’s important to know how you are perceived by others. So, the question to really ponder is not “Who am I as a leader?”, but rather “How do others perceive me as a leader?”

In my years working with entrepreneurs and business owners, this idea is often challenged. When pushback occurs, I stress that leaders are judged by their impact on others not by their intentions. It takes courage to find out how others perceive your leadership style and while you can choose to conduct a 360 Assessment, you can also solicit safe one-on-one feedback with open-ended questions such as:

  • What do you need from me as a leader?
  • What ways can we work better together?
  • How can/do I empower you?
  • How can I improve my communication with you?

These questions will stimulate dialogue reflecting to the team member that you are truly interested in your relationship and his/her experience. As a bonus, you’ll start to understand your natural strengths and areas for development. And I can’t think of a better time to start, as 2020 has been an unprecedented year on many levels. Communication with the intent to gain feedback on your perceived leadership will help now and well into the future.
